Where can you insert an IO needle in a child?

  • Humeral - posterolateral aspect of proximal humerus
  • Tibial - 2 cm inferior to tibial tuberosity on anteromedial surface
  • Femoral - 3cm above lateral condyle on anterolateral aspect
  • Iliac crest

What are the components of a long bone?

  • Epiphysis (end) - cortex and a cancellous bone filling (with red marrow)
  • Diaphysis (shaft) - hard cortex, hollow medullary cavity with white pulp
  • Ephiphyseal plate (between the two)
