Question 61

You've successfully anaesthetised an inexplicably ASA1 97 year old man for an emergency laparotomy for a perforated diverticulum.

Your ODP has asked you whether you would like a temperature probe.

Which of the following is false?

  • Heat is an energy form related to the kinetic activity of the molecules of a substance
  • Temperature is the quantification of the thermal state of a substance
  • The SI unit of temperature is the Kelvin (K)
  • Kelvin is Celsius (°C) plus 273.5
  • Approximately 33% of the body's heat energy is found in the peripheries

Answer

  • Kelvin is Celsius (°C) plus 273.5

It's actually Celsius plus 273.15.

Sorry not sorry - the more annoying the question the better you'll remember it.

0 degrees Kelvin is absolute zero meaning as cold as it can possibly be - zero heat energy - meaning there are no negative numbers on the scale.

An increment of 1 Kelvin is the same as 1°C which is nice, but remember for all the equations like the gas laws that use temperature, you need to use Kelvin and not celsius.

All of the other statements are true.
